Meridian Attribution in TCM: How Herbs Target Specific Organs & Systems

The attribution of meridians is the concept of localization of drug action, referring to the selective action of drugs on a certain viscera and meridians. The former in the practice of medicine observed that a drug is often mainly on a meridian or a few meridians occurring obvious effect, while the other meridian effect is small, or even no effect. The same attribute of cold and clearing the heat of the drug, some favor to clear the liver heat, some favor to clear the stomach heat, some favor to clear the lung heat or clear the heat of the heart; the same tonic, there are tonic lungs, tonic spleen, tonic liver, tonic kidney of different. Reflects the drug in the body to produce the effect of the part of each focus. These understandings are summarized, so that the systematization, the formation of the theory of attribution.
The attribution of meridians is based on the theory of internal organs and meridians, and is determined on the basis of the evidence of the disease being treated. As the meridians can communicate inside and outside the body, so the surface lesions can be affected through the meridians within the viscera, viscera lesions can also be reflected to the surface. Through the process of disease symptoms to determine the location of disease, which is the important content of the viscera identification. Meridian is the drug role of the concept of localization, such as Platycodon grandiflorum, almonds can cure chest tightness, coughing, belonging to the lung meridian; scorpion can stop convulsions, belonging to the liver meridian.
Although the meridians and internal organs are closely linked, but each into a system, so there are meridian identification and internal organs identification of different. The formation of meridian identification system earlier than the viscera identification, and thus different periods in history, different doctors, in determining the attribution of drugs, or focus on the meridian system, or focus on the viscera system. As a result, some drugs have different meanings. For example, according to the literature of materia medica, qiangwu and zedoary are attributed to the bladder meridian. Qiangwu can treat headache and body pain caused by exogenous wind, cold and dampness, limb and joint pain, its bladder meridian, is based on the meridian identification, cover the main surface of the bladder meridian of the foot sun, for a fence. Zedoary diarrhea diuretic dampness, its bladder meridian, refers to the bladder of the house. Qiangwu and Zedo, one for the relief of surface medicine, a water-relieving drugs, although all belong to the bladder meridian, but the two contain different meanings. As for some drugs only to a meridian, some drugs to a number of meridians, which shows that the scope of action of different drugs have a wide, narrow points.
Mastering the meridians will help improve the accuracy of medication. For example, in the case of solid internal heat, there are different types of heat in the lungs, heart, liver and stomach, and the drugs that clear heat in the lungs, heart, liver and stomach should be used to treat them respectively. Using the theory of attribution, the relationship between the internal organs and meridians must be taken into account. Because the organs and meridians are physiologically interconnected and pathologically influence each other, therefore, the clinical use of drugs is not simply the use of a particular meridian of the drug. Such as lung disease see spleen deficiency, every use of spleen drugs, so that the lungs have to support and gradually healed. Liver yang hyperactivity is mostly due to the deficiency of kidney yin, and every medicine that calms the liver and submerges yang is used together with the medicine that nourishes the kidney meridian, so that the liver can be contained and the hyperactivity of yang can be submerged by itself. If we stick to treating the lungs and the liver, and simply divide the meridians into different medicines, the effect will be affected.
